Bay of Plenty Polytechnic at Tauranga

A smaller library than the previous two I visited, Bay of Plenty Polytechnic Library has two branches and has recently been restructured from location based teams to function based teams.

Whoever chose the colours, carpet and desk designs did an excellent job as they look new, and welcoming, but are 9 or 10 years old.

  1. Hi Jillian,

Has this change of focus, changed how they are organising the collection?

    Hope your enjoying yourself.

  2. Hi Jillian, just thought you may like to know we are missing you. It would be interesting to know how the focus form location to team has affected the staff and how they overcame any problems.

  3. "Function based" means things like centralised technical services, acquisitions, electronic services and library systems, rather than doing all tasks at each branch library which is closer to what we have been doing. It did mean that once they worked out the new structure, some jobs were made redundant and every one had to apply for the new positions they wanted. Apparently 98% of staff were happy with the changes. I don't think it changed collection organisation, but rather the way in which some of the behind the scenes stuff is done. For example, they now have liasion librarians who work closely with specific faculties and who select resources for purchase. However the technical services librarians do the actual purchasing.
