The brave new polytechnic world

With the dawning of 2009, we entered a brave new world. TAFE and senior secondary college libraries are no more. Now we are all the Polytechnic library, providing services for students and staff of the Tasmanian Academy, the Tasmanian Polytechnic and the Tasmanian Skills Institute.

Several years ago, New Zealand embarked upon a similar experiment, establishing polytechnics in order to encourage more kiwis to continue with their education after year ten in high school. Apparently it has been a great success, and has become one of the models Tasmania's new Tasmania Tomorrow post year ten education system is based upon.

With this is mind, I'm heading off across the pond on April 15, supported by a Sir John Morris Travelling Scholarship from the State Library, to explore New Zealand's polytechnic libraries, to discover what makes them tick and what ideas we can use in Tasmania as we develop our libraries for the future direction of the brave new world.

I'd like to invite you all to follow my journey. I'll make posts of my initial impressions and photos of each place I visit. I'd appreciate your comments and questions. Before I go, I'd like to invite you all to contribute questions and ideas about what I should be looking for and asking the library staff as I travel.
